Main article: Belarusian NPP
Belarus presently has no nuclear power plants. However, in mid 2006, the Belarusian government approved a plan for the construction of an initial 2,000 MWe PWR nuclear plant, the Belarusian NPP, in the Mahilyow Voblast. In February 2007 it was announced that construction would start in 2008, for commissioning in 2014–2015 (later: 2015–2020).[1] The Belarusian Security Council made the final decision for construction on 15 January 2008.[2] The Nuclear Power Act, covering design and construction of nuclear facilities, security, safety, physical protection of facilities and regulation, and also prohibiting the production of nuclear weapons and other nuclear explosive devices, was adopted by the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus on 25 June 2008.[3]
