History
The Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development has been one of the leading organizations in the private sector for international development for the last 30 years.
The humanitarian engagement of the Novartis Foundation goes back to the 60s, when the Basel companies Ciba, Geigy, Sandoz, Durand&Huguenin, Hoffmann-La Roche and Lonza founded the Basel Foundation for Developing Countries. The Basel Foundation, for example, supported the field laboratory of the Swiss Tropical Institute (today: Tanzanian Training Centre for International Health) located in Ifakara, which still works closely with the Novartis Foundation.
Today, the Novartis Foundation focuses its work on the fight against leprosy, malaria, and tuberculosis as well as on the support of AIDS orphans. The foundation conducts research and publishes in the areas of business ethics and corporate responsibility. Furthermore, the foundation acts as facilitator between the private sector, the state and civil society [1].
Projects
The Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development supports development projects in the areas of access to healthcare in sub-Saharan Africa and on the Indian subcontinent. The aim is to improve access to primary healthcare and medicines as well as to strengthen the local healthcare systems. Furthermore, the foundation developed a project to support AIDS orphans in southern Africa, which is now continued by a local NGO as a transnational initiative. In India, the foundation focuses its work on the fight against leprosy and the stigma attached to the disease.
Another important area is the research work in the area of corporate responsibility, which encompasses the right to health and the subject of business and human rights.
As a third pillar the foundation fosters the dialogue in development policy and corporate responsibility topics among the private sector, non-governmental organizations, research institutions and state organizations. To this end, the Novartis Foundation organizes an international symposium in Basel every year[2][3].
