The municipality is composed of 10 parishes, and is located in Portalegre District.
The present Mayor is Maria Gabriela Tsukamoto, elected by the Unitarian Democratic Coalition.
The municipal holiday is Easter Monday.
In addition, it lends its name to one of the most famous Portuguese sheep cheeses (Certificate of Protected Origin or D.O.P.).
