Nikolai Zlobin (Николай Васильевич Злобин) is a Russian-American political expert, journalist and scholar working from Washington, D.C. PhD in Public Administration. Author of numerous books, articles and essays on politics, history and global security. During his career worked at a number of prominent Universities and Think-Tanks based in Russia and the US. Published in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, International Herald Tribune, Chicago Tribune, Vedomosti, Rossiyskaya Gazeta and others. He is director of Russian and Asian programs at World Security Institute in Washington, D.C.

Biography

Born in the USSR in Moscow on March 3, 1958.

Father - Vasiliy Ivanovich Zlobin (1919-2008). World War II veteran. PhD in history. Distinguished professor of history at Moscow State University (1951-2008). Author of a number of works on political history, World War II and theory of political parties published in the US, USSR and Europe.

Mother - Clara Konstantinovna Bondarenko (Zlobina) (1928-2003). Nuclear physicist.

Education

Undergraduate – Moscow State University, history major (1974 – 1979). Academic supervisor – professor V.Z. Drobijev.

Graduate School – Moscow State University, Public Administration. (1979 – 1982).

Doctoral School – Moscow State University, Public Administration (1990 – 1993)

Athletic achievements

Track & Field athlete during undergrad. Passed the standard for Master of Sport of the USSR (equivalent of Nationally Ranked Player).

Academic work

1983-1993 – professor and scholar at Moscow State University. Reached the status of a Senior Fellow. During that time - Kremlin advisor.

1993-2000 – professor and scholar in Europe and the US: Kennan Institute of Advance Russian Studies, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, American University in Washington, D.C., Georgetown, Stanford, Webster, George Washington and Harvard Universities.

Since 1993 one of the founders and editors of the leading Western journal on the USSR published in the US: “Demokratizatsiya. The Journal of Post-Soviet Democratization"

2000-2004 – founder and director of the International news agency Washington Profile ^[1]

2001-2005 – director of Russian and Asian programs at Center for Defense Information ^[2] in Washington DC.

Since 2004 – a permanent member of the Valdai International Discussion Club.

Since 2005 – a member of Expert board of Ria Novosti in Moscow.

Since 2006 – director of Russian and Asian programs at World Security Institute ^[3] in Washington DC.

Since 2008 – a permanent member of Yaroslavl Global Policy Forum.

A member of several American and International political clubs and societies.

Member of the board of directors of several Russian, American and International Think-Tanks and centers for political studies. Currently an adviser of the US government and according to media, unofficial adviser to Kremlin.

In the early 2000s - a columnist in Izvestia. Since 2008 - a permanent columnist in Vedomosti and Rossiyskaya Gazeta. Since 2010 – a columnist at “SNOB” ^[4].

In 2008 and 2009 had his own rubric on Serebryanniy Dojd’ radio as part of the “Solovyinnie Trely” program in Russia. Since 2010 co-hosts “Mejdunarodnaya Panormama” (“International Panorama”) with Vladimir Solovyiov on Vesti FM.

A frequent commenter on BBC and a regular guest and commenter in numerous radio and TV shows around the world.

Political stance

Nikolai Zlobin has proposed the theory of so-called “Polar-less” world, according to which the modern system of Global Politics is not based around the two super-powers anymore as it had been during the Cold War. Zlobin is a supporter of the idea of disintegration of sovereignty of states. Also known to believe that traditional national states and economies are dying out and promotes the creation of new principles of Global Security, replacing those with regional approach, and a new system of International Institutions.

Stated on numerous occasions that the process of USSR’s collapse would continue and new international borders would be formed on the Post-Soviet Territories. Considers that it is possible for Russia to fall apart into several states, and supports the elimination of internal national borders within Russian Federation.

Zlobin is one of the few American political experts to openly support the independence of Abhazia. At the same he is known to appraise reforms in Georgia’s domestic policy.

Zlobin is a harsh critic of Russian policy, although many of his readers and observers believe him to informally support it. In addition he is known to have personally met and interacted with Russia’s leaders in the past. For example in 2005 he was given a signed memo by Vladimir Putin stating that the latter wouldn’t run for president in 2008.

Was mentioned several times in documents, published by WikiLeaks, where he was defined as an American political expert connected to “Edinaya Rossiya” (United Russia) party. As stated in the documents, Zlobin had come to a conclusion that Russian president-prime minister tandem works.
