The university's athletic program fields teams in 19 varsity sports. The Lobos participate in the NCAA Division I and is a charter member of the Mountain West Conference (MWC). The men's soccer program is the only varsity team that does not compete in the MWC, but instead participates in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF).
Contents
History
The "Lobo" nickname goes back many years. They varsity athletic teams were originally referred to as "The University Boys" or "Varsities". During 1920 the student newspaper UNM Weekly editor George S. Bryan came up with the name Lobo, which is the Spanish word for wolf.[1]
