At the 2006 census, its population was 4,430, in 1,236 families.[2] The city is located 72 kilometres (45 mi) from Tabriz and 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) from Marand. It was considered a rural area until 2004 but is now classed as a city. The town is the only one in northwestern Iran to produce saffron, the mainstay of its economy.
