Corridors

A master plan consisting of six different corridors has been produced by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

Corridor 1

The system's first corridor runs from Uran to Nerul via Ranjanpada, covering a total distance of 28.3 kilometres (17.6 mi).

Corridor 2

This corridor stretches for 21 kilometres (13 mi), starting at Belapur and running via Kharghar, Taloje, Kalamboli and Khandeshwar to end at Navi Mumbai International Airport.

Corridor 3

The third corridor begins at Vashi and goes via Nerul, terminating at Panvel. It has a total length of 25 kilometres (16 mi).

Corridor 4

This corridor runs for 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) between Ranjanpada and Seawoods.

Corridor 5

The 20-km-long (12-mi) fifth corridor will run from Dighe to Belapur, going via Turbhe.

Corridor 6

The sixth corridor begins at Vashi and ends at Mhape via Ghansoli, covering a distance of 9 kilometres (5.6 mi).

Construction

Corridor 2 of the Navi Mumbai Metro will be built first. The proposed route will link Belapur, Kharghar, Taloje, MIDC, Kalamboli and Khandeshwar railway station, terminating at the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport. A maintenance depot will be constructed on a 20-acre (81,000 m2) plot at Taloja for the circular line, and a temporary maintenance depot will be constructed on five hectares of land at Khandeshwar.[2]

Phase I

The first section to be constructed will have a total length of around 21.45 kilometres (13.33 mi)[3], divided into three sections – an 11-km Belapur-to-Pendhar stretch, a 2.2-km Pendhar-to-MIDC stretch, and an 8.15-km MIDC-to-Khandeshwar stretch. The approved project cost of the first phase is INR1,694 crore.

The first section's stations will include Belapur Rly, Sector-7 Belapur, Science Park, Utsav Chowk, Sector-14, Central Park, Pethapada, Sector-34, Panchnand, Pendhar, Sector-10 Kamothe, Sector-2E Kalamboli, Sector-7E Kalamboli, Sector-10E Kalamboli, Kasadi, and two railway stations in the MIDC area.

Project status

The Navi Mumbai Metro project received formal approval on 29 April 2010,[4][5] and a public hearing on 21 May reported no major objections.[2] The metro's foundation stone was laid on 1 May 2011 by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, with general foundation work on the system's first phase commencing in October 2011.[6]
