The live performances were heavily edited by producer Teo Macero, and the results were named after the day of the week the band performed. The album is particularly noteworthy for the extraordinarily precocious soprano sax work of the then 19-year-old Steve Grossman. For the 1997 Columbia CD reissue, the compositions and composers were correctly identified and indexed. However, the songs remain the heavily-edited versions of the original LP release, not the complete unedited performances.
The original LP release had liner notes written by Morgan Ames, Popular Music Editor of Hi Fidelity magazine, and Mort Goode. The 1997 Columbia reissue featured additional liner notes by Miles Davis Septet drummer Jack DeJohnette.
