Amateur career

In 2004 at the Junior Championships the Southpaw beat Englishman Danny Price in the semifinals and Russian Nikolay Pavlyukov 38:16 in the final.

He later lost to compatriot Yoan Pablo Hernandez and Yusiel Napoles at 178lbs but beat Kenneth Egan and Constantin Bejeranu.

He went up to 201lbs but had problems with the world class domestic competition like 2006 champion Luis Ortiz who beat him in 2006 (he returned the favor in 2007) and especially by Osmay Acosta who beat him 2007 in the National Final.

Professional

He, along with Alexei Acosta and Luis Garcia defected to Ireland in 2007.

In 2008, he turned professional in Cork under Cuban coach Nicholas Cruz (Hernández) who came to Ireland in 1988. He calls himself Mike "The Rebel" Perez.

Perez has a professional record of 17 fights and 17 wins including 12 knock-outs.

On 7 May 2011, Perez won the International Prizefighter tournament, beating American Tye Fields in the final to take home a £32,000 prize. After the fight, Perez stated the victory would earn him a world title shot in the near future.[2][3]
