Fed. 25Fed. 28 → Mexican Federal Highway 26 (Carretera Federal 26) is a Federal Highway of Mexico.[1]. From an intersection on the eastward side of the Sierra Madre Occidental, the paved section of the highway proceeds westward to the crest of the Sierras. From there unimproved (and probably dangerous) dirt roads cross the Sierras and go down the west side of the Sierra Madre Occidental Mountains to the vicinity of Culiacan.
The Eastward Terminus of Mexican Federal Highway 26. Highway 26 starts from an intersection on Mexican Federal Highway 39 in the state of Durango, between Santiago Papasquiaro (on the south) and Santa Catarina de Tepehuanes (to the north). The intersection is located about 5 miles (8 kilometers) north of Santiago Papasquiaro.
The Paved portion of Highway 26, From the Eastward Terminus to the Crest of the Sierras. From the eastern terminus the paved section of the highway continues west to the crest of the Sierra Madre Occidental. In this section, the highway passes (from east to west)through Los Altares, El Ojito de Camellones, El Salto, Cienega de Nuestro Senora (distinguished from Cienega de Dolores which is a short distance to the south), Cuevecillas, Llano Grande, and La Canada del Macho, which is on the crest of the Sierra.
Beyond the Pavement. At the crest of the Sierras, a few kilometers beyond La Canada del Macho, the pavement ends. There are a series of unpaved roads that fork off in this area. A roads drops off the crest to the west, down to the town of Canales. Another road goes on south along the crest of the Sierras, then west to Llano Blanco, then south again and west until it eventually goes down the western side of the Sierras to the area of Culiacan.
