Maurice Elliott (23 November 1942 - 19 October 1996) was a Scottish ex-professional footballer who was a forward. He was born in Dumfries and played for his home town club Queen of the South. He went on to play for Heart of Midlothian, Montrose and Stenhousemuir. ^[1]

Youth Career

Elliott played for Dumfries Academy and Collin Boys Club. ^[2]

Queen of the South (1st Spell)

Elliott began his senior career with Queen of the South when he signed at the start of the 1960-61. In his first spell at Queens he scored 16 goals in 23 league appearances for the club. During that season he attracted the attention of the Edinburgh club who play at Tynecastle.^[2]

Heart of Midlothian

After only 7 months at Palmerston Park, Elliott signed for the reigning Scottish League Champions, Heart of Midlothian on 1 March 1961. His debut was on 18 March 1961 in a 1-0 home defeat to Kilmarnock. He scored in a 2-1 home win versus Celtic on 21 October 1961 and also played in a 1-1 draw against Rangers in the 1961 Scottish League Cup Final. Rangers won the replay 3-1 but Elliott never featured. He played in both legs versus Inter Milan in the second round of the 1961 Fairs Cup. Despite these laudable achievements he was unable to secure first team football at Hearts. He never played for the first team after the end of the 1961-62 season. Elliott left Hearts midway through the 1963-64 season, having scored 2 goals in 10 league appearances for the club.^[2]

Queen of the South (2nd Spell)

George Farm signed Elliott on New Year’s Day 1964, for the second half of the 1963-64 season. He made 5 league appearances failing to find the net. In his two spells with the club Elliott scored 16 goals in 28 league appearances. In all competitions Elliott scored 22 goals in the 40 matches that he played in. ^[2]

Montrose

Elliott moved to Links Park to play for Montrose at the start of the 1964-65 season and stayed for two years. He scored 25 goals in 50 league appearances during his spell, a goal every two games on average.^[2]

Stenhousemuir

Elliott moved to Ochilview Park to play for Stenhousemuir at the start of the 1966-67 season and stayed for two years. He scored 16 goals in 57 league appearances during his spell near Larbert.^[2]

Broxburn Athletic

Elliott then departed from the senior game, going to Juniors club Broxburn Athletic for the 1968-69 season. He retired from football completely after requiring a second cartilage operation.^[2]

Life after football

Elliott ended up being a surveyor after hanging up his football boots. He was to eventually run the company, Kean Kennedy. He moved to the Algarve region of Portugal in the early 1990s to start up a property management company.^[2]

Death

Elliott died suddenly of a brain haemorrhage at the age of 53 on 19 October 1996 and was cremated in Lisbon. His ashes were scattered in the Atlantic Ocean.^[2]
