Base Aérea Teniente Benjamín Matienzo Matienzo Base in 1962 Coordinates: 64°58′S 60°08′W / 64.967°S 60.133°W Elevation 25 m (82 ft) Population – Total 15 Only open in summer – no population during winter months The Base Aérea Teniente Benjamín Matienzo is an Antarctic station, managed by the Argentine Air Force. It a temporary base, only open in the summer months. The median annual temperature at the site is −11.6°C, the high since its inception was 13.1°C and the low recorded at −44.4°C.
The base was founded on 15 March 1961 as a joint operation between the Argentine Army and the Air Force as the Base Conjunta Teniente Matienzo ("Joint Base Lieutenant Matienzo"), and on 15 November 1963 its name was changed to Destacamento Aeronáutico Teniente Matienzo ("Aeronautical Post Lieutenant Matienzo"), depending under the Air Force only this time, and since 1965 the name has been changed to the current one. It was shut down during 1972–1973, and was reopened on 8 September 1974, then closed again in 1984–1985, changing its status since to a non-permanent base.
