Biography
The son of a factory owner, he attended Apeldoorn Lyceum. He received a bachelors degree from the Hotelschool The Hague, and then obtained a base degree and an MBA at the University of Groningen.[3]
Heineken
He began as a graduate at Amsterdam-based Heineken International NV, now the third largest brewer in the world, in 1987. He became chief operating officer in 2005.
Morrisons
On 4 September 2006, he took over the running of Morrisons. Sir Ken Morrison CBE had been at the helm since 1956 over thirty seven years. It was also at a time when Morrisons was notably under financial pressure due to subsuming the (larger) competitor Safeway, which involved divesting many of their smaller stores, and moved its headquarters. The fact that he had spent almost twenty years at Heineken was one of the reasons Sir Ken Morrison appointed him, for whom length of service is an important attribute. Sir Ken stayed as Chairman until March 2008. Sir Ian Gibson is now Chairman.
Under his leadership, the Morrisons logo was changed. New television adverts were introduced such as the Christmas promotion with the footballer Alan Hansen. The slogan More Reasons to shop with Morrisons was simultaneously dropped, replaced with "Fresh For You Everyday" to reinforce the integrated supply chain message.
Marks & Spencer Group PLC
On Wednesday 18 November 2009, it was announced that Bolland would become CEO of Marks & Spencer Group PLC. He took up this role on 1 May 2010, when he took over from the then current Chairman Stuart Rose, having been released from his Morrisons contractual agreement six months early.[1]
