The Kildare-Waterford line is a railway line connecting Dublin with the major port of Waterford City in County Waterford. The line is part of the significant network of intercity routes connected to the Dublin-Cork Main Line from Dublin Heuston. The line was constructed by the GSWR, At Cherryville Junction Co. Kildare the lin splits form the Cork line. Both passenger and Freight services run on the line. Passenger services are operated by the 22000 Class DMUs run by Intercity.

Incidents and Accidents

Over the last number of years there have been a number of serous incidents, causing long delays.

  • The 18:25 train from Waterford - Dublin struck beer pegs between Muine Bheag and Carlow and damaged the engine and wheels of the train. Passengers had no light and heat. It was believed that youths put the beer pegs on the line. A engine from Dublin was brought to the train. The service was delayed by around 4 hours.
  • The 15:05 train from Dublin - Waterford partly derailed and the junction after Kilkenny station. The train had left Kilkenny and was enroute to Waterford, as it was changing lines a points switch controlled in Limerick tipped causing the front two carraiges to partly derail.
  • The 18:25 train from Dublin - Waterford struck a cow between Kilkenny and Thomastown. The brake pipe on the engine was broken on impact and the brakes were stuck to the track. An engine from Waterford was bought to the train to haul the broken train to Waterford. A second engine was brought from Dublin and the train returned to Kilkenny and the train proceeded to Waterford. The service was delayed by 5 hours.
  • The 14:10 train from Dublin - Waterford left Thomastown and as the level crossing gates were closing a car and trailer tried to pass through and got caught on the track. The train was extremely close to the crossing, but it stopped in time. A lot of damage was done to the level crossing. The train was about 1 hour 30 minutes late.
