History
Dr. Ian Clarke was born in South Armagh, Northern Ireland in 1952. [1] He trained as a General Medical Practitioner. He moved to Uganda in the late 1980s to set up a rural community hospital, north of Kampala, Uganda's capital city. After starting that rural hospital, now known as Kiwoko Hospital, Dr. Clarke decided to start a private upscale hospital in the heart of Kampala to cater to the emerging middle class in the city. His objective was to use the income from the private hospital to upgrade the services both at the private hospital and at the community hospital, thus positively impacting health services in the country.[2][3]
The private hospital called, International Hospital Kampala (IHK), opened in 1996 and provides specialist services in the city. Included among those services are Oncology and Plastic surgery, along with the traditional disciplines: Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynecology. The hospital at Namuwongo, a suburb of Kampala, has a bed capacity of 200. In 2008, Dr. Ian Clarke started International Health Sciences University (IHSU), which occupies the top floor of IHK.
Dr. Clarke also writes a weekly column in The New Vision, Uganda's biggest daily, and has further projects in Juba, South Sudan and in Zanzibar, Tanzania. He is a dual citizen of both The United Kingdom and Uganda.
