The seat was first contested at the 2010 election. The division was created under the Australian Electoral Commission's 2009 Redistribution of Queensland.[1] The division of Wright covers a large area of the Gold Coast Hinterland and includes the towns of Beaudesert and Boonah. Wright was notionally a Liberal Party held seat on a margin of 4.8%.
The name of the electorate has been chosen to honour the poet Judith Wright.
