History

The Mearmin was built in 1968 by millwright Dijkstra of Giekerk.[2] It incorporated parts of a drainage mill which stood at Roodkerk,[3] and also parts from various other demolished mills in Friesland.[4] This mill was demolished by millwrights Fabrikaat Medendorp of Zuidlaren, Drenthe at a cost of ƒ1,700. A licence to built the mill was granted on 25 April 1968 and the mill was put to work at the end of 1969.[2] By 2006, the mill was not in working order, with one of the sails severely damage.[4] As of November 2010, the mill was in a derelict condition.

Description

De Mearmin is what the Dutch describe as a "grondzeiler" . It is a two storey smock mill on a single storey base. There is no stage, the sail reaching almost to the ground. The smock and cap boarded. The mill is winded by tailpole and winch. The sails are Common sails. They have a span of 15.10 metres (49 ft 6 in).[2] The sails are carried on a cast iron windshaft, which was cast by Koning of Foxham, Groningen in 1903. The windshaft also carries the brake wheel which has 50 cogs. This drives the wallower (29 cogs) at the top of the upright shaft. At the bottom of the upright shaft, the crown wheel, which has 37 cogs drives a gearwheel with 34 cogs on the axle of the Archimedes screw. The axle of the screw is 470 millimetres (1 ft 7 in) diameter and the screw is 1.17 metres (3 ft 10 in) diameter and 3.75 metres (12 ft 4 in) long. The screw is inclined at 22½°. Each revolution of the screw lifts 480 litres (110 imp gal) of water.[2]
