Dave Eggar (born in New York City on June 28, 1974) is an American cellist, pianist and composer.

Early life

Eggar was a musical prodigy as a child, beginning to play the cello and piano at age three and performing on Broadway and at the Metropolitan Opera at age seven. He trained as a classical cellist at the Juilliard School, and later graduated from Harvard University and the Juilliard School's Doctoral Program. He debuted in Carnegie Hall at 15 as the youngest winner in the history of the Artists International competition. He has appeared throughout the world as a classical soloist, including concerto appearances at Avery Fisher Hall, Carnegie Hall, London’s Barbican Center, the Paris Opera, and the Hollywood Bowl.

Career

Eggar has performed and recorded with artists in numerous genres, including The Who, Coldplay, John Denver, Ornette Coleman, Josh Groban, Roberta Flack, Bon Jovi, Michael Brecker, Phil Ramone, Dave Sanborn, Abbey Lincoln, Luciano, Sly and Robbie, Lucia Micarelli, Dianne Reeves, Alex Skolnick, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Brandy, Hannah Montana, Beyonce, Fall Out Boy, Pearl Jam, Folk Soul Revival, The Spin Doctors, The Manhattan Transfer, Carly Simon, Duncan Sheik, Sinéad O'Connor, Kathleen Battle, EdibleRed, Breaking Benjamin, Ray LaMontagne, Bebel Gilberto, Chris Potter, Linda Eder, Gil Goldstein, Eugenia Zukerman, Lyfe Jennings and Corinne Bailey Rae. He has toured extensively as the solo cellist with the rock band Evanescence and with singer Amy Lee, including performances on The View, PBS, The Tonight Show, MTV and VH1.

Eggar was also a founding member of the FLUX quartet, and has premiered over 100 works of contemporary music, including pieces by Frank Zappa, Charles Ives, John Cage, Conlon Nancarrow, Elliott Sharp, Ornette Coleman, John Pattitucci, Oliver Lake, Morton Feldman, Sir Harrison Birtwistle and Augusta Read Thomas.

In addition, Eggar has composed extensively for classical and contemporary dance, and has collaborated as composer or featured performer with companies such as the New York City Ballet, (Chris Wheeldon's Morphosen), Shen Wei Dance Arts (Connect Transfer), Attack Theatre (Noto, Games of Steel, the Fitting Room), Rebecca Stenn Dance (Blueprint, Left of Fall, Carmen Sweets), Jose Limon Company (Moor's Pavane, La Malinche, Musical Offering), Thresh (Past-Present), and Dance Brasil.

Eggar’s work as a solo cellist has been featured in the films Accepted, The Last Winter, Claire Dolan, Joshua, and The Roost. Eggar's latest project, Blue Massive, has widened his musical reach and sparked an international interest in the band's eclectic sound. Eggar signed with Domo Records in 1998 and released three albums.

Accolades

His list of awards and accomplishments includes the Sony Records "Elevated Standards" prize for accomplishments in the field of classical music (1997) and accolades from Time Magazine, ASCAP, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Geraldine Dodge Foundation, the Leonard Bernstein Foundation, the Presidential Medallion in the Arts, the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, the US Japan Cultural Friendship commission, the MacDowell Colony and Yaddo. “Itsbynne Reel,” a track from his most recent record, "Kingston Morning," was nominated for a Grammy Award.
