Club career
Everton
Born in Winsford, Cheshire, Fox learnt his trade at his boyhood club Everton's youth system but the closest he came to a first team appearance was as an 18-year-old being named on the bench for Everton's home match against Aston Villa in October 2004.
Stranraer
He was loaned out to Stranraer, where he played 11 games (scoring once against Berwick Rangers)[2] and helped them secure promotion to the Scottish First Division before his eventual release from Everton in the summer of 2005.
Walsall
Walsall moved quickly to sign Fox, where he made over 100 appearances in all competitions.
Fox had been linked with a move to Leeds United in the January 2008 transfer window. Leeds reportedly had a bid of up to £300,000 (including clauses) turned down by Walsall.[3]
Coventry City
Coventry City then agreed a fee with Walsall as Fox wished to move up a league, and he joined the Sky Blues on 28 January 2008 in a double transfer deal (with his defensive partner Scott Dann also moving to the Ricoh Arena only 72 hours later), after agreeing personal terms and a passing a medical. Before this, Colchester United had agreed a fee with Walsall for Fox.[4]
Celtic
On 16 July 2009, Nottingham Forest tabled a bid believed to be in the region of £2 million to bring him to the City Ground, but the bid was subsequently rejected.[citation needed] On 23 July, after Coventry accepted a bid from SPL side Celtic, Fox went to Glasgow to have a medical at Celtic Park.[5] He signed for Celtic the next day for an undisclosed fee believed to be £1.5 million[6][7] and was immediately drafted into the squad for the match against Al-Ahly in the Wembley Cup.[citation needed]
Fox made his competitive debut for Celtic in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers against FC Dynamo Moscow. He became a regular free kick taker for Celtic, but did not score a goal, although he did provide several assists in games against St Johnstone and Dundee United.[8][9]
Burnley
On 29 January 2010, after just six months in Glasgow, Fox joined Premier League club Burnley on a three and a half-year contract for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £1.8 million.[10] On his debut for Burnley, Fox claimed an assist and the winning goal against West Ham United on 6 February in a 2–1 home win. His efforts lifted Burnley above West Ham and out of the relegation zone. They went on to be relegated to the Championship.[11]
Southampton
On 11 August 2011, he signed for Southampton on a four-year deal for an undisclosed seven figure fee rumoured to be around £1.8 million.[12] On 16 August 2011, he made his debut coming off from the bench replacing David Connolly in a 5-2 away win over Ipswich Town.[13]
International career
Fox was called up to the England under-21 squad for the match against Poland under-21s on 25 March 2008 and was selected in the starting XI.[14]
He declared himself available to play for Scotland through his grandfather.[15] Fox was selected for Scotland's friendly against Japan in October 2009,[16] but had to withdraw due to an injury sustained while playing for Celtic.[17] Fox finally made his debut for Scotland in a 3–0 defeat to Wales on 14 November.
