- Conversion of units of energy
-
The SI unit for energy is the joule.
The kilowatt hour, or kilowatt-hour, (symbol kW·h, kW h or kWh) is equal to 3.6 megajoules.
The large calorie, kilogram calorie, dietary calorie or food calorie (symbol: Cal) approximates the energy needed to increase the temperature of 1 kilogram of water by 1 °C. This is about 4.182 kilojoules.
The IEA/OECD define one toe to be equal to 41.868 GJ[1] or 11.63 MWh.
A gram of TNT releases 980–1100 calories upon explosion. To define the tonne of TNT, this was arbitrarily standardized by letting 1000 thermochemical calories = 1 gram TNT = 4184 J (exactly).[2]
