(1993)"Como La Flor" (English: Like The Flower) is a song by Mexican-American singer Selena, from her third studio album, Entre a Mi Mundo (1992). Written and produced by Selena, Abraham Quintanilla III,[1] and Ricky Vela, the song was also produced by Abraham Quintanilla Jr,[2] the track was released as the album's second single. It was solicited to U.S. Top 40, Tejano and rhythmic contemporary radios in the early months of 1992. The single became a worldwide success selling very quickly throughout the U.S., Mexico, and South America, and Selena began to be respected as a professional singer. This single also helped Selena gain acceptance in Mexico and tour all over the country.[unreliable source?][3] "Como La Flor" became the first of many signature songs of Selena,[unreliable source?][4] due to the song's popularity, the song charted number 1 on Billboard's Latin Regional Mexican Airplay.[dead link][5]
The song was included in all of Selena's live performance, beginning in 1992, as the starting number or the final song of the night.[6] "Como La Flor" was the final song Selena performed at her final televised performance at the Houston Astrodome.[7] On April 7, 2005, ten years after her death, the song was performed at Selena ¡VIVE! with a video montage of Selena singing and the original Dinos playing their instruments.[8] "Como La Flor" is known as the number one fan-favorite tune. The song was awarded "Regional Mexican Song of the Year" at the 1993 Premio Lo Nuestro awards.[9]

Background Information
The song "Como La Flor" was written by Selena's brother, A.B. Quintanilla III,[10][11] and one of the original Selena y Los Dinos's members Ricky Vela,[12] in the later months of 1991. The song was created on the Selena Tour Bus called Big Bertha. The creation resulted in being the first song featuring only Selena, on No. 1 on Billboard charts.[13] In 1991, the single "Buenos Amigos", which Selena recorded a duet with Álvaro Torres[14] charted No. 1 before.[15] "Como La Flor" featured Selena as a singing duet artist and not a solo act.
Promotion
An official poster which featured the single's artwork was released in Mexico and the US a few weeks after the song peaked at No.1 on Billboard. Before the poster was released, Selena had a photo shoot from EMI Latin Records Inc. to take professional photos for the single. While the preparation was beginning, EMI Latin included the track "La Carcacha", since the song had heavy airplay around that time, on the CD. A music video was never planned and asked for from EMI Latin, due to Selena's ongoing tours.[16][17]
Critical reception
Once the song was released to US radio stations, the song played out on most radio stations. Heavy airplay in Mexico resulted in Selena to begin her tours there. Selena began playing at sell-out concerts after the released of "Como La Flor".[18]
The song "Como La Flor" became an international success due to its popularity from North America and South America, news of the song's success spread nationwide.[19] "Como La Flor", became known as "Fans Fave" and was released in most of all Selena's complication albums after her death.[citation needed] Thanks to the success of the song, numerous products has been released under the name of "Como La Flor", such as; perfumes,[20] books,[21] and albums[22] named after the song was released throughout North America. The song became even more popular soon after Selena's death, when radio stations played the song non-stop.[23] Since her death, many artists have covered the song in other genres.[24]
Chart performance
The single entered Billboard's Hot Latin Tracks and peaked at No.6,[25] while the song peaked at No 1 on Billboard's Latin Regional Mexican Airplay in 1992.[26] The song became Selena's third song to be charted. The song was also the third song to be charted off of the Entre a Mi Mundo album, subtending the songs "Buenos Amigos", and "Amame". Sales of the single weren't documented, but estimates of 50,000 copies were sold in the US alone.
