The Church of the Holy Mother of God of the Mens Monastery (also known as Arants Vank or Pashavank) [1] was a 14th century Armenian church[1] in Tiflis on the right bank of the Kura river.[2] It was the largest church in Tiflis until it was demolished circa 1930.[1] The church was built in brick in the 14th century, restored in 1480, and more extensively in 1789.[1] The cathedral was the seat of the Armenian archbishop in 1914.[2]

History

The Harants monastery was founded in the 14th century by the grandsons of Baron Umek who came to Tiflis from Karin (Erzerum) in the 13th century.[3]

Architecture

The Church of the Holy Mother of God had a very original design: it was a basilica with three naves of equal width, barrel-vaults under saddle-roofs with three cupolas above the east spans, the central one being higher.[1] The drums were dodecagonal with twelve long windows under blind arches topped by horizontal molding and a row of decorative bricks. The interior was painted by Yovnatan Yovnatavean in 1789.[1]
