Charca people

Charca people

The Charca people were an Indian tribe that inhabited the Chuquisaca Department prior to the arrival of the Spaniards. They were subjects of the Inca Empire and suffered incursions of the Chiriguanos.

Spanish Conquistador Alejo García is believed to be the first Caucasian person to make contact with the Charcas in the year 1505.

The city of Sucre was founded in 1538 in Charcas land.
