Nicholas "Nasty Nick" Bateman (born 5 November 1967) is a British media personality and a former contestant on the first series of the British version of Big Brother.

Big Brother

Bateman first came to public prominence as a contestant on the first series of the UK version of Big Brother. He became a popular member of the group, and was the only contestant never to receive a single eviction nomination. However, he was soon dubbed "Nasty Nick" by the tabloid press because of his duplicitous nature, playing members off against one another. After 36 days he was finally exposed by the other housemates, who confronted him over his behaviour and also uncovered his attempts to manipulate fellow housemates' votes in the weekly eviction process, in violation of Big Brother rules. He was asked to leave by the show's producers. The episode in which Nick was confronted by the others attracted 6million viewers. Such was the media interest in this first series, the news that Nick had been thrown out featured on the front page of every national newspaper in the UK, apart from the Financial Times which put the story on page 3.

After his departure from the show, Nick enjoyed reasonable media exposure and attended many show-business parties and premieres. He went on to present the television show Trust Me, BBC2's "Email weekend" as well as Film Four's "Double take" wrote a book entitled Nasty Nick: How to be a Right Bastard , and appeared on the reality television series Back to Reality and in the Big Brother pantomime. Later, he featured as the narrator in a stage production of The Rocky Horror Show, as well as appearing at the Theatre Royal Lincoln in Jack and the Beanstalk.

He has spoken at both the Cambridge and Oxford Unions and is still in demand as an after dinner speaker.

In recent times, however, he has opted to step out of the public limelight to concentrate on writing.

Nick has enjoyed some success as a freelance writer and as a social commentator. Nick has also trained at the BBC in Single Camera Director as well Camera operation and Avid Editing.

In 2010 he returned to the Big Brother house to compete in Ultimate Big Brother which was the final episode of Big Brother. In Ultimate Big Brother he finished in fifth place, after which he earned a nickname given to him by Big Brother; "Not So Nasty Nick". This was given to him because he was quite a nice person in the house compared to the way he acted in the first series of Big Brother. He therefore became the only contestant ever to be there for the first and very last day of the programme.

In 2011, Nick and his magazine fashion stylist wife Lynnette Peck Bateman opened an online vintage fashion boutique called Lovely's Vintage Emporium.

Nick now presents his own radio show on 107.8 Academy FM (2011) in Kent every Sunday from 10am to 2pm

Personal life

He grew up in Kent with his four sisters. He was educated at a boarding school in Kent for five years, then at the private Gordonstoun School near Elgin in Scotland at the same time as the Earl of Wessex. He decided not to go to university but instead went travelling round the world for three years. He worked for ATN Channel 7 in Sydney, Australia on "Sons and Daughters" "Romper Room" and "Newsworld"

On returning to England he then worked in the City of London for ten years as a broker for the Willis Group Holdings (working at Lloyd's of London) from 1990.
