Cycling in Victoria

Cycling in the Australian state of Victoria (including its capital Melbourne) is a popular pastime, sport and way of getting around since at least 1896, as indicated by a poem by Banjo Paterson: Mulga Bill's Bicycle.

Cycling in Victoria has largely been encouraged by:

  • the development of bicycle networks in town and cities throughout the state,
  • the growing number of regional rail trails,
  • the number of organised rides held throughout the year, including the popular Great Victorian Bike Ride, and
  • the number of cycle races held in Victoria, such as the Herald Sun Tour.
