Mary Ames, whom he married, was bornNovember 19 ,1840 , atWest Bridgewater, Massachusetts , and diedJuly 12 ,1889 .Holbrook graduated from high school in
Northfield, Minnesota , in 1892. He was appointed to theUnited States Military Academy onJune 15 ,1892 and graduated onJune 12 ,1896 , as a second lieutenant in theCavalry .Military career

4th Cavalry Brigade atFort Walla Walla ,Washington , untilDecember 22 ,1896 , and atBoise Barracks , Forts Sherman and Wardner,Idaho , until May 1899.On
June 24 ,1889 , he was ordered to the Philippine Islands and during thePhilippine-American War he participated in the Northern Campaign, and in battles at Arayat, Cabiao, San Isidro, Santa Rosa, and Talavera.Holbrook served with General
Theodore Schwan 'sSouthern Expedition fromJanuary 3 toFebruary 18 ,1900 , and was at the Battles of Muntinlupa andBinan , Carmona and Silan, Tiaong, Candaleria and Tayabas.He was promoted to first lieutenant on

54th Field Artillery Brigade , in training untilOctober 3 ,1918 ; served with the1st Field Artillery Brigade , in theMeuse-Argonne Offensive , untilNovember 7 ,1918 ; and again commanded the 54th Field Artillery Brigade, atChateau Reynel and elsewhere untilMay 22 ,1919 .Holbrook returned to the United States in May 1919 and commanded
