The Sugarite State Park is a New Mexico state park located 6 miles northeast of Raton, New Mexico. Sugarite State Park is on the Colorado-New Mexico State border.
History
Once a coal mining town, Sugarite had a population of nearly one thousand at it's prime. With an increase in the use of butane as a heating source, among others, the town was shut down in 1941.
Activities
In the park is Maloya Lake, which covers 120 acres of the 3,600 acre park and provides the City of Raton with water. The park provides campsites; 12 with electric and 40 simple/developed, picnic areas, fishing and boating on the lake, and cross-country skiing in the winter months.
