Route description
Route 236 begins at an intersection with the New Seneca Turnpike (Onondaga CR 41) in the town of Marcellus, which is located near the village border. Route 236 parallels a creek and County Route 41 as it begins. The road heads northward, quickly intersecting with the Old Seneca Turnpike (County Route 133), with which it becomes concurrent. This concurrency is short, with Route 236 turning on Limeledge Road soon after.[2]
Route 236 then continues through rural regions, with homes, fields and trees surrounding the highway. The highway then intersects with Stump Road, which is the final stretch of CR 236. The highway then intersects with one of its suffixed routes, County Route 236C (Glover Road). Route 236 then continues passes Marcellus County Airport, where it turns to the east. There it intersects with County Route 236A, which is a connector to NY 321. County Route 236B is also accessible via CR 236A.[2]
Route 236 then turns to the south along the town line of Marcellus and Skaneateles. The highway is then known as Shepard Road and comes quickly to an intersection with County Route 244, where Shepard Road turns off. Route 236 after this then becomes known as Northwest Town Line Road. Route 236 passes rural surroundings like on Limeledge Road and comes to a four-way intersection with Stump Road (County Route 176). Route 236 turns along Stump Road and heads eastward, terminating at Limeledge Road, which was part of CR 236.[2]
History
Designation
Each of Route 236's names comes with a different meaning from the town of Marcellus. The first road, Gypsy Road, is named after the English gypsies that once lived in the area. The Limeledge Road alignment is named after the abundancy of limestone in the area. Northwest Townline Road is named after the northwest townline of Marcellus, which runs along the Skaneateles border. Stump Road, the final segment of CR 236, is named after the stumps that had to be removed to produce the road.[3] Also, the short alignment of Shepard Road was named after the Shepard family, who settled in Marcellus during the early 19th century.[4][original research?]
Some of the early residences along the segments that are now County Route 236 gave much of the town's streets their names. An 1860 map shows the Glover family living on what is now County Route 236B (Flat Rock Road). There was also another Glover residence on County Route 236 itself.[5][original research?] Glover Road is now designated County Route 236C by the Onondaga County Highway Department.[6]
Current history
County Route 236 is not signed and the fact that only one county route in Onondaga County is signed,[7] the routes are not usually marked on maps, so an exact date for the route's inception is unknown.[8][9][original research?] There is an exception to this, however. The New York State Department of Transportation revealed in a 1989 and 1990 Digital Roster Quadrangle for the towns of Marcellus and Camillus that CR 236 ran along the said alignment. The maps also showed the others in the area as their respective designations. However, the quadrangles do not mark the three suffixed routes. Instead, they are all marked as parts of CR 236.[1][10]
In December 2003, the Onondaga County Department of Transportation proposed reconstructing Limeledge Road (CR 236A) and nearby Flat Rock Road (CR 236B). The plans included widening Limeledege and Flat Rock for trucks heading to NY 321 (along with a nearby quarry in Marcellus) and removing a bend on Limeledge. On December 17, a resident of Limeledge Road made headlines in the Syracuse area when she opposed the idea on the basis that Limeledge would become a "speedway".[11] The following week, the outcry grew and the Onondaga County Department of Transportation was asked to reconsider. The county's plan was to rebuild Limeledge Road from scratch, and they had told residents in March about it. The original resident making an outcry dropped any conduct accusations after being told it would not affect the neighborhood.[12]
Suffixed routes
- CR 236A - A short connector to NY 321 that continues the Limeledge Road designation.[13]
- CR 236B - Not accessible via County Route 236, but instead Route 236A, Route 236B is Flat Rock Road, which is a connector to a farm near Camillus.[3][14]
- CR 236C - County Route 236C, also known as Glover Road, is a connector from CR 236 to NY 174.[6] Route 236C's name, Glover Road, is named after the John Glover family who were stonecutters from Ireland.[3]
