next_route=141Highway 140 is a provincially maintained highway in the Niagara region of the Canadian province of
Ontario . Highway 140 currently serves as a connection between Highway 3 and Highway 406. Along with Highway 58, it links Port Colborne to Welland. From there, Highway 406 connects to Thorold, St. Catharines and theQueen Elizabeth Way .Highway 140 is 11.0 km (6.8
mile s) in length. It runs on the east side of theWelland Canal . As Highway 406 runs on the west side of the Canal, the two are linked by the Main Street Tunnel, technically a part of Niagara Regional Road 27 and the unsigned Highway 7146.The highway was opened in 1972 as a part of the flurry of highway and railway rearrangements in the area due to construction of the
Welland By-Pass on theWelland Canal .The highway's future is uncertain as the Ontario Ministry of Transportation still has to make a decision on a location for the southward extension to Highway 406. A routing to the east of the Welland Canal has been an option for the extension, which would assume the routing of Highway 140. Should the 406 be extended on the west side of the canal along Highway 58, it is expected that Highway 140 will be downloaded to the Niagara Region.
Erie—Lincoln MPPTim Hudak has introduced a bill in theOntario Legislature that, if passed, will designate Highway 140 as an extension of Highway 406 into Port Colborne. [http://www.timhudakmpp.com/news2.cfm?newsid=466] This bill is supported by local civic leaders, who see it as the first step to the eventual twinning of Highway 140 as a proper 400-series highway.References
