History
It is the site of a community predating Sir Titus Salt's Saltaire near Bradford. Beginning in 1849, Colonel Edward Akroyd, a woollen mill owner, built a mill with decent houses for the workforce, as well as a canteen, a school, a library and a church.
It was served by Copley railway station from 1856 to 1931.
Religion
St. Stephen's Church was built on Copley Lane, but just over the river in Greetland, as the rector of Halifax did not want it built in his parish.[1] It was designed by local architect W. H. Crossland in a French inspired Gothic style.[2]
