The New Zealand women's cricket team^[1] played their first Test match in 1935, when they lost to England. Since then they have only won two Tests, once against Australia, and once against South Africa.

Their greatest success in one-day cricket was when they won the 2000 World Cup under captain Emily Drumm. In a hotly contested final, they scored 184 to narrowly beat Australia by four runs, Australia being all out for 180.

They also play in the annual Rose Bowl series against Australia. On a tour to England in 2004, they played the first ever Twenty20 international (of either gender) against England.

Recently the team was involved in the 2007/2008 Rose Bowl series against Australia, a series that Australia won 3-2.

The team is known as the White Ferns, which is derived from the use of the fern as New Zealand's sporting emblem.

Haidee debuted for the White Ferns at the age of 19 against the visiting South African side in 1998/99 and has played 100 ODIs and scored 2340 runs. She claimed her highest ODI score of 91 against Australia in the second match of the 2005 Rose Bowl Series in Perth, Australia. Haidee was a member of the 1999 New Zealand Cricket Live-In Academy and spent two winters playing club cricket in England. In the 2007/08 State League season Haidee scored 296 runs at an average of 59.2. Haidee was awarded New Zealand’s premier women’s batting award, the Ruth Martin Cup, for the 2004/05 season.

Nicola Browne

After strong performances in Australia with New Zealand A in 2001/02, Nicola was selected for the White Ferns to play in the Rose Bowl Series that summer and has been a member of the team ever since. She was a member of the 2002 NZC Live-In Academy. In the 2007/08 State League competition Nicola scored 359 runs at an average of 51.28 and took 14 wickets at an average of 25.71. She has played 69 ODIs for the White Ferns and was named the player of the series in the 2007 Rose Bowl Series played in Darwin, Australia.

Sarah Burke

Sarah was a member of the NZC Academy in 2001, and in recent seasons has been a consistent performer for Canterbury Magicians in the State League. First selected for the White Ferns tour to India in 2001, which was subsequently cancelled, she eventually debuted in the World Series in February 2003. She toured Ireland and England in 2004 and was a member of the White Ferns team to the 2005 World Cup in South Africa. She played three ODIs against India in the 2006 series and went to Brisbane for the 2006 Rose Bowl Series and India for the Quadrangular Series in February 2007.

Rachel Candy

Rachel earned selection in the squad after impressing at both domestic level and for New Zealand A in their series against Australia Youth in 2006/07. She toured England in 2007 where she made her White Ferns debut. In the 2007/08 State League she took 17 wickets at an average of 15.64 for the Central Districts Hinds.

Selena Charteris

Selena was selected in the national squad after an impressive performance in the 2006 New Zealand A playing programme against the White Ferns and India and was then rewarded with selection for the Quadrangular Series in India in February 2007 where she made her debut. She has played 2 ODIs. She has played 47 State League matches for Canterbury Magicians, and has taken 53 career wickets at an economy rate of 3.55 with her off-break bowling.

Ingrid Cronin-Knight

Ingrid captains the state Auckland Hearts in the State League and has played 64 matches, scoring 1063 runs. She has played for New Zealand A in recent seasons and her fine form for Auckland in this year’s competition has seen her rewarded with selection. She is the second-highest run scorer this season, with 372 runs at an average of 62.

Sophie Devine

Sophie is an all-rounder from Wellington who moved to Canterbury at the end of the 2006/07 season. She made her State League debut for Wellington Blaze as a 14-year-old, and has played 42 State League matches. Sophie made her debut in the 2006 Rose Bowl Series, and in the 2007/08 State League season she was the highest wicket taker with 18 wickets at an average of 13.22. In the 2007 Quadrangular Series in India, Sophie improved her previous best ODI batting and bowling figures. Sophie played in the 2007 Rose Bowl series in Darwin but was unavailable for the tour to England. She has played 11 ODIs. A talented sportswoman, she is also a national age-group representative hockey player.

Lucy Doolan

Lucy has been elevated to the White Ferns squad after a promising debut for New Zealand A in their series against Australia Youth. She has been a dominant figure at age-group level and has played 21 State League matches for Wellington Blaze. A versatile player, Lucy can also keep wicket, along with batting in the top order and bowling off-spin. In the 2007/08 State League she took 15 wickets.

Maria Fahey

Maria was selected for the White Ferns 2003 tour to India where she debuted in spectacular fashion, heading the batting statistics with three fifties, and averaging 52.25 across the one-day series. She has played 40 ODIs, scoring 1120 runs at an average of 30.27. Maria dropped down the batting order during the 2005 World Cup in South Africa, top scoring with a fine 73* off 94 balls in the semi-final loss to India. In the 2006 Rose Bowl Series she scored 261 runs at an average of 43.5 and in the 2007 Quadrangular Series in India she scored 185 runs at an average of 26.4. Maria is a product of the highly successful Timaru Girls’ High School team, which dominated the national secondary schoolgirls’ competition in the late ‘90s and was a member of the 2002 NZC Academy. In the 2006/07 State League competition Maria scored 380 runs at an average of 42.22 for Canterbury Magicians.

Ros Kember

Ros made her debut for the White Ferns in the 2006 Rose Bowl Series in Brisbane. An opening batsman, she has been a consistent performer for Auckland Hearts, in the State League, and has been a successful member of the New Zealand A team in recent seasons. Ros made her highest ODI score on the 2007 tour to England. In the 2007/08 State League she scored 290 runs at an average of 32.22.

Sara McGlashan

Sara was selected for the White Ferns 2002 winter tour to Europe, debuting against the Netherlands. She also played in the World Series in February 2003, toured India in November 2003 and Ireland and England in 2004. She has remained a member of the team ever since. Sara was a member of the New Zealand Cricket 2002 Academy and has played 60 ODIs, scoring 976 runs at an average of 22.18. In the 2007/08 State League season she scored 371 runs at an average of 53.

Beth McNeill

Beth debuted for the White Ferns in the 2003/04 home and away Rose Bowl series against Australia and has played 10 ODIs. She missed selection for the 2005 World Cup, but in the 2005/06 season she was a key performer for New Zealand A in matches against the White Ferns and India. She has played 66 State League matches, and in the 2005/06 season, she took 16 wickets and scored 118 runs.

Works at Saint Kentigans College in Auckland as a P.E teacher.

Aimee Watkins

Aimee debuted for the White Ferns in the 2001/02 Rose Bowl Series. In the side’s 2002 winter tour to Europe, she claimed her best bowling figures of 4-26 against the Netherlands. She was called to South Africa as a replacement player in the 2005 World Cup and played in the home series against India in February 2006, the Rose Bowl in Australia in October 2006 and the Quadrangular Series in India in February 2007. She was a member of the 2001 NZC Academy intake, and has played 56 ODIs. Aimee captains Central Districts Hinds in the State League and in the 2006/07 season she scored 227 runs at an average of 37.83 and took 9 wickets.

Rowan Milburn

Rowan represented the Netherlands in the 2000 World Cup, after playing in the Dutch domestic competition. Since returning to New Zealand she has been a solid performer in the State League, having played 88 State League matches. Rowan captained New Zealand A in 2006 in matches against the White Ferns and India and earned her selection for the White Ferns after consistent performances in the State League. She has played 2 ODIs debuting against India in the Quadrangular Series in India in 2007. Her father is a former New Zealand Test wicketkeeper.

Louise Milliken

Louise has developed into a strike bowler since her debut for the White Ferns in the home leg of the 2001/02 Rose Bowl Series. On the 2004 tour to Ireland and England, she was the highest wicket-taker in the one-day series with 14 wickets. She was again the White Ferns leading wicket-taker at the 2005 World Cup in South Africa with 11 wickets, including career-best figures of 5-25 v India and she took 11 wickets in the Quadrangular Series in India in February 2007. Louise was a member of the 2002 NZC Academy, and has played 48 ODIs. In the 2006/07 State League competition she took seven wickets at an economy rate of 3.38. Louise was awarded New Zealand Cricket’s premier women’s bowling award, the Phyl Blackler Cup, in 2005/06.

Rachel Priest

Rachel is an aggressive keeper–batsman who has been a key member of the State Central Hinds team in recent seasons. She has played 39 State League matches. She was selected for New Zealand A last summer for the series against Australia Youth which saw her earn selection in the White Ferns squad.

Amy Satterthwaite

Amy is a promising all-rounder who has played 52 State League matches for the State Canterbury Magicians, captaining them in the 2007/08 season where she scored 252 runs. She was selected for New Zealand A for matches against the White Ferns and India in 2006 and again in the 2006/07 series against Australia Youth. A tall left-handed top-order batsman, Amy scored a century on the Magicians’ 2006 tour of England. She made her debut in the 2007 Rose Bowl Series in Darwin and has played 8 ODIs. In a Twenty20 International against England at Taunton in 2007 Amy returned the remarkable figures of 6-17 off four overs.

She has played 12 ODIs. Sarah captained Otago Sparks in the 2006/07 State League, scoring 209 runs at an average of 34.83 and taking eleven wickets at an economy rate of 2.66.

Helen has played 61 ODIs for the White Ferns. She was a member of the 1999 NZC Live-In Academy and played in the 2000 World Cup winning team, featuring in two outstanding run-outs in the final. Helen played for New Zealand A in their 2003/04 series against Australia Youth, earning a recall to the White Ferns for the Australian leg of the Rose Bowl Series in the same season. She retained her place for the 2004 tour to Ireland and England, where she scored her maiden ODI century, with 115* against Ireland at Dublin. She was a member of the White Ferns team for the 2005 Rose Bowl Series and has remained in the team. She has taken 50 wickets at an a economy rate of 3.17. In the 2006/07 season Helen won New Zealand’s premier bowling award, the Phyl Blacker Cup. In the 2007/08 State League competition she scored 119 runs at an average of 59.5 and took 13 wickets at an average of 10.84.
