HH Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (born 1970) is a United Arab Emirati politician and member of ruling family of Abu Dhabi (emirate). He is the half brother of the current President of UAE, Emir (ruler) of Abu Dhabi, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Outside of the Emirates, he is most popularly known as the owner of Manchester City Football Club.

Early years

Born in the Abu Dhabi emirate, the 5th son of emir of Abu Dhabi Zayed II and wife Fatima, Mansour bin Zayd Al Nahyan graduated school in his homeland and left for United States for higher education. In 1993, he received his Bachelor's degree in political science.^[1]

Political career

In 1997, he was appointed as chairman of the Presidential Office, which his father Zayed II is the first and by-then president of UAE. After the death of his father, he was appointed by his eldest half brother Khalifa II as 1st Minister of Presidential Affairs of the United Arab Emirates, which is the merge of Presidential Office and Presidential Court. He also served numbers of position in Abu Dhabi, to support his brother Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

He was appointed as Chairman of the Ministerial Council for Services, which is considered a ministerial entity attached to the Cabinet, comprising a number of ministers heading the Services Departments.

Since 2000, he chaired National Center for Documentation and Research. In 2005, he became the deputy chairman of the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC), chairman of the Emirates Foundation, Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority and Abu Dhabi Fund for Development. since 2005. In 2006, as the chairman of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department.

In 2007, he was appointed Chairman of Khalifa bin Zayed Charity Foundation.

Sheikh Mansour served as the Chairman of First Gulf Bank until 2006,^[2] and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Zayed Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation. Sheikh Mansour has established scholarship programs for U.A.E students to study abroad. He is also chairman of the Emirates Horse Racing Authority (EHRA), emphasising his love for sport.^[1]

Such is Sheikh Mansour's political and business influence, some media outlets have reported that Mansour has U.S. president, Barack Obama on speed dial.^[3][4]

Sheikh Mansour heads the International Petroleum Investment Company, which owns 71% of Aabar Investments and is used as an investment vehicle.

Oil investment

In 2005, he was appointed as member of Supreme Petroleum Council. In the same year he chaired the Board of Directors for International Petroleum Investment Company and member of the Board of Directors of Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA). In 2007 he was appointed as the Chairman of the Emirates Investment Authority, the sovereign wealth fund of UAE.

Business stakes

Sheikh Mansour is known to have a 32% stake in Virgin Galactic after investing $280m in the project through Aabar in July 2009.^[5][6] Aabar also has a 9.1% in Daimler after purchasing the stake for $2.7 billion in March 2009^[7] and it was reported that Aabar wishes to increase its stake to 15% in August 2010.^[8]

Football

In September 2008, Sheikh Mansour bought Manchester City Football Club to much initial confusion. Sulaiman Al Fahim was the figurehead with Sheikh Mansour "the main player"^[9] and Robinho joined within hours of the buyout being completed on transfer deadline day. It had been said, Sheikh Mansour had to been looking for a Premier League club to buy for a while^[1] and Manchester City's 48,000 seater stadium^[10] with the sixth highest revenue stream in England was a desirable purchase with potential as no other mid-table Premier League club could offer this proposition.^[10]

In 2010, the British newspaper, The Times ranked Sheikh Mansour as the sixth most powerful person in sport, citing Mansour's approximate £750m investment in every area of Manchester City and a £1 billion investment in the area around the City of Manchester Stadium as contributing factors.^[3]

In addition to the Manchester City, Sheikh Mansour is chairman of the multi-sport Al-Jazira Club.

Sport

Sheikh Mansour is an accomplished horse rider and has won a number of Endurance Racing tournaments held in the Middle East, and is chairman of the Emirates Horse Racing Authority.^[11]

He is the patron of an annual road running competition in the Abu Dhabi: the Zayed International Half Marathon.^[12]

Personal life

In the middle 90's he married to Sheikha Alia bint Mohammed bin Butti Al Hamed. They have one son together, his name is Sheikh Zayed.

In May 2005 he married to Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum President of Dubai Women Establishment. They have a daughter, Sheikha Fatima (born June 9, 2006), and two sons, Sheikh Mohammed (born December 4, 2007) ^[13] and Sheikh Hamdan (born June 21, 2011).
