New Bolsover model village is a village adjoining the town of Bolsover in Derbyshire.

History & Etymology

It was begun in the early 20th century, by the Bolsover Mining Company, the term "model village" refers to the fact that this was a planned village, built in a philanthropic attitude, to benefit and better the lives of workers/labourers, in this case those of the Bolsover Colliery.

The architects for many of the buildings were Arthur Brewill and Basil Baily from Nottingham.

The village is planned around a village green, and built in a pseudo-rural, half timbered Mock Tudor style, with sash windows. It once had its own school/village hall, but this was demolished in 1987.

The 'Model' as it is known locally was completed in 1896 by the Bolsover Colliery Company Ltd. It was one of the finest examples of colliery village planning in the country. It included 200 houses for miners and colliery officials. A tub railway delivered coal directly from the colliery to the coal store behind each house. The 'Model' still remains in good repair today with houses both privately owned or owned by the local authority.
