Academics

Upon admission, students commence a two year course leading to the Cambridge GCE "A" Level examinations, with up to 4 "A" Level subjects, chosen either from the Arts Faculty or the Science Faculty. As in all junior colleges, most students sit for the General Paper and Mother Tongue paper as "Higher 1", and undergo Project Work in JC1. Students with aptitude and deeper interests in their "A" level subjects sit up to "Higher 3" paper, for an advantage in bids for scholarships and further education.

Facilities

College facilities include a gym, rehearsal rooms for performing arts groups (with pianos and dance studios), and a library in a 2-storeyed block, run by the National Library Board. The college has a fully air-conditioned hall, five lecture theatres equipped with audio-visual equipment, and a sports block and track.

Students have access to the school's "Integrated Virtual Learning Environment" (IVLE) for 2008 intakes, which allows students to discuss assignments online as well as access to academic databases such as "The Economist" and "Science Resource Center". There is also the MJC Leisure and Learning portal (http://intranet.mjc.edu.sg) where students can sign up for Organised Student Activities, submit suggestions and gain endorsement for participation in projects. The college has a student cafe, "PerKafe", run by the Business club and offering Swensens ice-cream, P.osh brownies, soft drinks, mash potato and other snacks.

CCA

The college has co-curricular activities (CCAs) in three groups - Sports and Games, Performing Arts and Clubs and Societies.

MJC's niche CCA groups include the award-winning Choir, Symphonic Band, and Dance society of the performing arts groups and the boys' soccer team, the girls' soccer team, the Wushu team, the sailing team, the Fencing team as well as the Canoeing team on the sporting front. The choir was awarded Gold with Honours in the Singapore Youth Festival and the girl's floorball team won the champion trophy in the 2009 National Floorball Competition.

MJC has a student-published periodical, called "Musings@Meridian", which is headed by the College Publications Team, providing coverage on school events and articles on issues ranging from fashion to current affairs.

The Photography Club have teamed up with SPCA Singapore for exhibitions.

The Rockclimbing Club has also done well and won medals.

Students' Council

The Students' Council (SC) is in charge of enriching school life. It is a group of students elected by the student body to represent student interests and to plan school events. Elections take place after a period of shortlisting and rallying, following which the council elects its own Executive Committee (EXCO) which includes the President, Vice Presidents (Assets and Admin), Head of Students' Affairs, Head of Public Affairs, and Secretary.

Currently, the 9th Students' Council is led by:

President - Saiket Jirapa
Vice President (Admin) - Vernon Yeo
Vice President (Assets) - Seah Raynian
Secretary - Chen Li Yun
Head of Public Affairs - Lim Yong Liang
Head of Students' Affair - Sheana Yue

Some of the activities that the SC organizes includes Orientation, Orientation Group Leaders (OGL) Recruitments and OGL camps, Council Recruitment and Council Training Camps (CTC), Teachers' Day, J1 End of Year Bash, J2 Prom Night and an SC event whereby the SC will decide what type of event they will hold for the school. The SC provides day to day service to the Meridians in the form of vending machines, loaning of blazers and lockers, and the morning assembly.

History and achievements

The college started operations in 2003 at the suggestion of RAdm Teo Chee Hean, then Education Minister, to establish a new college in the Pasir Ris area, taking on the name "Meridian".

Between 2003 and 2004, the College Anthem, as well as the official school logo, were released. Activities include public concerts hosted by performing arts groups, the annual MJC Open House/Learning Agora and Inter-House games.

In 2005 the college hosted its official opening ceremony on the 25th of February, graced by R.Adm Teo Chee Hean, and observed its first ever College Day on the 23rd of July. MJC's pioneer batch of graduating students (Class of 2003) made the news, exceeding expectations with excellent results, and the college clinched a Value Added Award.

On the sporting front, the college's soccer team playing in the National A Division Inter-School Soccer Championships were crowned champions for the 2005 season, clinching their first President's Challenge Cup. They proceeded to reach the finals for six consecutive years (2005–2010), and managed to win twice more in the year 2008 and 2010, defeating Victoria Junior College and SAJC with a score of 2-1 respectively.

Performing arts groups did well at the 2005 Singapore Youth Festival, clinching four gold awards (Symphonic Band, Choir, Malay Dance, Guitar Ensemble) and two silver awards (Modern Dance, Chinese Orchestra).
