State Route 120 is a primary state highway forming a crescent-shaped route through Arlington County, Virginia, United States. Its southern terminus is at U.S. Route 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway), just south of Crystal City. Its northern terminus is at State Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) near Chain Bridge and the District of Columbia boundary. It has interchanges with Interstate 66, U.S. Route 50 (Arlington Boulevard), and Interstate 395.

The street name for Route 120 is Glebe Road, specifically North Glebe Road north of US 50 and South Glebe Road to the south. For a short distance in southern Arlington, addresses on Glebe Road are served by a parallel frontage road, Route F714. An unnumbered spur from Route 120 into Alexandria is called (West and East) Glebe Road.

Route 120 is part of the National Highway System.

History

A road along the present path of Route 120 has existed at least since the 1750s. This road, linking Alexandria to Great Falls, was first known as the "Road to the Falls". It linked Christ Church in Alexandria with the glebe lands of the ministers of The Falls Church in what is now the City of Falls Church and the Christ Church in Alexandria and thus became known as Glebe Road.

Route 120 appeared in its current form in the 1940 renumbering, replacing a small part of State Route 9, which itself had replaced the original designation of State Route 25 in the 1933 renumbering. The majority of SR 25 became State Route 123 in 1940.

As of 2005, South Glebe Road is being extended past Route 1 to serve development in the Arlington portion of Potomac Yard.

Previous State Route 120s

Another Route 120 was designated in Franklin County in the 1933 renumbering. It consisted of two sections. One was the present-day State Route 739 from its intersection with the present-day U.S. Route 220 at Boones Mill westward for five miles (8 km). The other was the present-day State Route 602 from its intersection with State Route 40 near Ferrum northward for five miles (8 km).
