Sumas was impacted heavily by the narrowing gap between the US and Canadian dollars. The city, which relied mostly on business of border-crossers to keep it's economy going, saw intense drops in demand after the dollar fell. Many Sumas businesses have closed, including restaurants, gas stations, convenience stores, etc. Elevated border security and longer border crossing wait times have also contributed to Sumas's declining economy.
