The United States Census Bureau has defined 940 Core Based Statistical AreasThe 940 Core Based Statistical Areas (CBSAs) currently defined by the United States Census Bureau include the 363 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), which have an urban core population of 50,000 or more, and the 577 Micropolitan Statistical Areas (μSAs), which have an urban core population of 10,000 or more but less than 50,000.] (CBSAs) for the United States of America. The Census Bureau defines a Combined Statistical Area if a two or more adjacent Core Based Statistical Areas have substantial commuting ties. In 2007, 50.13% of Americans lived in the 40 most populous Core Based Statistical Areas. This made the Jacksonville, FL MSA the median population American community.
