According to the
United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 38.2square mile s (99.0km² ), of which, 37.6 square miles (97.4 km²) of it is land and 0.6 square miles (1.6 km²) of it (1.65%) is water.It is the highest town in the county. Perhaps due to its altitude, it has historically had the coolest weather.

Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 588 people, 219 households, and 160 families residing in the town. Thepopulation density was 15.6 people per square mile (6.0/km²). There were 354 housing units at an average density of 9.4/sq mi (3.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.94% White, 0.51% African American, 2.04% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.17% from other races, and 0.17% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.17% of the population.There were 219 households out of which 39.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.9% were couples living together and joined in either
marriage or civil union, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.5% were non-families. 20.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.03.In the town the population was spread out with 32.1% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 9.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 94.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.5 males.
