The French built a fort, which was dedicated to St. Anne, on the island in 1666, the first European settlement in what is now Vermont. The island is named after the leader of this expedition, Captain La Motte. These were the first Europeans to spend a winter in Vermont in 1666-7.

According to the

As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 488 people, 202 households, and 143 families residing in the town. Thepopulation density was 61.3 people per square mile (23.7/km²). There were 415 housing units at an average density of 52.1/sq mi (20.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.75% White, 1.23% Native American, 0.20% Asian, and 0.82% from two or more races.There were 202 households out of which 27.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.4% were married couples living together, 8.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 22.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.85.
In the town the population was spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 4.3% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 27.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.6 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $36,125, and the median income for a family was $41,094. Males had a median income of $28,542 versus $24,000 for females. The
per capita income for the town was $20,286. About 7.7% of families and 9.4% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 11.5% of those under age 18 and 2.5% of those age 65 or over.Notable events
