As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 10,945 people, 3,931 households, and 2,810 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 1,465.8 people per square mile (565.7/km²). There were 4,312 housing units at an average density of 577.5/sq mi (222.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 69.07% White, 11.88% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 16.66% from other races, and 1.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 38.68% of the population.There were 3,931 households out of which 37.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.1% were married couples living together, 13.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.5% were non-families. 25.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.31.
In the city the population was spread out with 30.1% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 92.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,694, and the median income for a family was $35,155. Males had a median income of $27,416 versus $18,872 for females. The
per capita income for the city was $14,464. About 16.5% of families and 20.1% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 27.1% of those under age 18 and 17.1% of those age 65 or over.Education
