- List of archaeological sites in Tennessee
This list of archaeological sites in
Tennessee (in the southeastern United States) encompasses sites that have either contributed substantially or have the potential to contribute substantially to research regarding people who have lived in what is now Tennessee since Prehistoric times. Note that a "historical" site is not necessarily an "archaeological" site. A historical site should be included only if actual field work has been conducted at the site. While artifacts from multiple cultural periods are often found at excavation sites, the "cultural affiliation" category on this list refers only to periods in which there was significant occupation or a significant event (e.g., a battle) at the site.Legend for cultural affiliations:
*
Paleo-Indian — roughly 12,000 B.C. (and possibly earlier) to 8000 B.C.
* Archaic — c. 8000 B.C. to 1000 B.C.
* Woodland — c. 1000 B.C. - 1000 A.D.
* Mississippian — c. 900 A.D. to 1600 A.D.
*Cherokee — affiliated with proto-historic and historic Cherokee occupation (c. 1600-1800 A.D.)
* British colonial — affiliated with Euro-American expansion, pre-1776.
* American — affiliated with Euro-American occupation or events post-1776The sites are listed alphabetically by county.
