In the 2001 census, Raipur community development bloc had a total population of 151,274 of which 77,184 were males and 74,090 were females. Upen Kisku of CPI(M) won the Raipur assembly seat, reserved for scheduled tribes, six times in a row. He defeated his nearest rival Bibhabati Tudu of AITC in 2006, Kshetra Mohan Handa, Independent, in 2001, Smritirekha Kisku of INC in 1996, Aditya Kisku, Independent, in 1991, Bhabatosh Soren of INC in 1987 and 1982.
