As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 14,760 people, 4,621 households, and 3,826 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 2,580.8 people per square mile (996.3/km²). There were 6,208 housing units at an average density of 1,085.5/sq mi (419.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 83.61% White (including Latinos that were born before the 60s considered whites by law ), 0.21% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 13.73% from other races, and 1.94% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 78.10% of the population.There were 4,621 households out of which 36.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.2% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.2% were non-families. 15.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.19 and the average family size was 3.57.
In the city the population was spread out with 30.0% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 22.9% from 25 to 44, 17.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $23,928, and the median income for a family was $24,827. Males had a median income of $17,476 versus $14,683 for females. The
per capita income for the city was $10,564. About 24.9% of families and 32.4% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 48.0% of those under age 18 and 12.9% of those age 65 or over.Education
