According to the
United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 9.2square mile s (23.7km² ), of which, 9.0 square miles (23.4 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (1.42%) is water.Demographics

census GR|2 of 2000, there were 3,214 people, 1,299 households, and 928 families residing in the town. Thepopulation density was 355.7 people per square mile (137.3/km²). There were 1,393 housing units at an average density of 154.2/sq mi (59.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 90.39% White, 7.34% African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.21% of the population.There were 1,299 households out of which 28.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.9% were married couples living together, 12.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.5% were non-families. 25.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.87.
In the town the population was spread out with 22.5% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 25.9% from 45 to 64, and 15.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $35,926, and the median income for a family was $42,467. Males had a median income of $32,500 versus $26,250 for females. The
