Chhatna ( _bn. ছাতনা) is a town, community development bloc and assembly constituency in Bankura district in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Geography

Chhatna is convert|13|km|abbr=on from Bankura town on the Bankura-Purulia road. Susunia is convert|10|km|abbr=on north-east of Chhatna. [ [http://www.wb.nic.in/westbg/vishnupur.html West Bengal Tourism] ]

The soil is undulating, red and latté rite based. Climatically the zone is within tropical dry sub-humid area having rainfall ranging from 1100 to 1400 mm and temperature maximum 45oC and minimum 10oC normally. This region is undulating with mounds and valleys. Soils are well drained and are susceptible to soil erosion due to rapid external drainage or run off, soil reaction ranges from acidic in ridges and near neutral in valleys. Agriculture in this region is mostly depends on rain. Ground water is not easily and economically tappable. Demographics

In the 2001 census, Chhatna community development bloc had a total population of 169,141 of which 85,562 were males and 83,579 were females. Decadal growth for the period 1991-2001 was 8.32% for Chatna, against 13.79% in Bankura district. Decadal growth in West Bengal was 17.84%. Chhatna is an intermediate panchayat in Bankura district, with Jamtora, Jhunjka, Jirrah, Metyala, Saldiha, Susunia village panchayats under it. In the 2006 state assembly elections, Anath Bandhu Mondal of RSP won the Chhatna seat defeating his nearest rival Mahasweta Nondal of AITC. Subhas Goswami of RSP won the seat six times in a row defeating Swapan Mondal of AITC/ INC in 2001 and 1996, Santi Singha of INC in 1991, Tapan Banerjee of INC in 1987, Arun Patra of INC in 1982 and Kamal Kanta Hembram in 1977. As per order of the Delimitation Commission in respect of the delimitation of constituencies in the West Bengal, assembly constituency no. 248 Chhatna will cover Chhatna community development bloc and Veduasol, Brahmandiha, Hatagram Indpur and Ragunathpur gram panchayats of Indpur community development bloc.
