United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 11.3square mile s (29.2km² ), of which, 11.2 square miles (29.1 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.44%) is water.Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 4,349 people, 1,752 households, and 1,189 families residing in the town. Thepopulation density was 387.8 people per square mile (149.7/km²). There were 1,950 housing units at an average density of 173.9/sq mi (67.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 80.52% White, 17.87% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.62% of the population.There were 1,752 households out of which 30.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.4% were married couples living together, 14.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.1% were non-families. 29.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the town the population was spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 84.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.4 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $27,625, and the median income for a family was $41,438. Males had a median income of $31,506 versus $20,081 for females. The
