The North State Conference was a collegiate athletic conference in the United States and is the predecessor of Conference Carolinas. Founded on December 6, 1930 at the Washington Duke Hotel in Durham, North Carolina, the conference was formed “for the greater advantage of the small colleges in North Carolina.”[1] Conference members participated in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and later National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II.
There were seven charter members of the North State Conference: Appalachian State University, Atlantic Christian (now Barton College), Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon University, High Point University, and Lenoir–Rhyne College (now Lenoir–Rhyne University).[2]

Conference changes
On May 20, 1961, with the addition of Newberry College, the conference changed its name to the Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC), but was known less formally as the Carolinas Conference.[2] The conference had dual NAIA and NCAA Division II membership during the 1993–94 academic year. In 1995 the Carolinas Conference dropped its NAIA affiliation to participate as a full member in Division II. Longwood University was also admitted and the conference name was changed to the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference (CVAC).[2]
