Elon (formerly known as Elon College) is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. It is part of the Burlington, North Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 6,738 at the 2000 census. The town of Elon is home to Elon University. The town was called "Elon College" until the college known as Elon College became Elon University. The town then changed its name officially to Elon.

Geography

Elon is located at coor dms|36|5|50|N|79|30|44|W|city (36.097135, -79.512102)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.4 square miles (8.8 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 6,738 people, 1,903 households, and 1,141 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,991.7 people per square mile (769.7/km²). There were 2,004 housing units at an average density of 592.4/sq mi (228.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 87.61% White, 10.24% African American, 0.04% Native American, 1.02% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.59% of the population.

There were 903 households out of which 26.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 6.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.0% were non-families. 22.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.94.

In the town the population was spread out with 14.7% under the age of 18, 42.7% from 18 to 24, 15.2% from 25 to 44, 13.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 22 years. For every 100 females there were 80.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $41,049, and the median income for a family was $64,091. Males had a median income of $45,536 versus $30,127 for females. The per capita income for the town was $16,805. About 3.9% of families and 20.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.5% of those under age 18 and 9.9% of those age 65 or over.
