New Milford High School is a four-year public, coeducational high school in New Milford, Connecticut. Currently, approximately 1,600 students attend the school. Although a majority of the students attending the school are from New Milford, some students are from the nearby towns of Sherman and Washington. The school is located at 388 Danbury Road in the town of New Milford and is a part of the New Milford School District. Other high schools in the district include Canterbury School and Faith Church, although New Milford High School is the only public high school.

Architecture

Construction on the new school was finished in 2000 after the town's municipal authorities (under the leadership of then Mayor Arthur J. Peitler) voted to reorganize the public school system. Changes included redefining elementary school as K-3rd grade, introducing a new intermediate school, redefining the middle school as 7th-8th grade, and construction of a new high school. These changes sparked a controversy over the amount of funding taxpayers would need to supply for the changes to be completed. For this reason, the pool in the original plan for the new high school was never constructed. To this day, upperclass students of the school sometimes jokingly respond to freshman students' inquiries about the pool by saying "the pool's on the fourth floor," despite the building's three-floor structure. There are in fact stairs that lead beyond the third floor, but it's only used for storage.

The school is in the shape of an "H," with two hallways on each open end of the "H" on the first floor. Those are the location of the Auditorium and the band room on one side, and the Physical Education area in the other. Each hallway is given a number. The hallway with the main entrance is #1, the middle hallway is #2 and the hallway with the back entrance facing the football field is hallway #3. The room numbers are a four digit number. The first digit is the floor the class is on, the second digit is the hallway number, and the last two digits are the room number in that hallway. For example, the German room is on the first floor, third hallway, and the 18th classroom in that hallway, therefore the room number is 1318. Similarly, if the room number is 3117, it's located on the third floor, first hallway, and it's the 17th room in that hallway.

Athletics

The New Milford High School athletics department has a fight song given as a gift from Tulane University (also the Greenwave) after New Milford's fund raiser to help Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina.[2]

"Green Wave, Green Wave Hats off to thee.

Fight, fight, fight for our vic-to-ry.

Shout to the sky the Green Wave war cry.

The bravest we'll defy.

Hold that line for our green and white.

We will cheer for you.

So fight, fight old Green Wave fight on to vic-to-ry."[3]

Activities

New Milford also has several other activities to participate in including chorus, cheerleading, color guard, concert band, and marching band, and winter percussion ensemble.

Clubs

Approximately every other Thursday, students have an activity period, where students go to one out of about 60 clubs of their choice. Some of these clubs include:

  • SADD (Students against destructive decisions)
  • The Wave Review (School Newspaper)
  • Yearbook Club
  • Gay/Straight Alliance
  • National Honor Society
  • Team Waramaug
  • Executive Clubs (one for each grade)
  • Yoga Club
