Ve (Arabic)

Ve (Arabic)

Ve or Vāʼ (ڤ) is an additional letter of the Arabic alphabet, derived from fāʼ (ﻑ) with two additional dots, representing a voiced labiodental fricative (IPA: IPA|/v/). It is sometimes used in Arabic to write certain words of foreign origin, such as ڤولڤو "volvo" (Volvo) and ڤيينا "viyēnā" (Vienna).

In the Jawi script ڤ is used to represent a voiceless bilabial plosive (IPA: IPA|/p/).

In Algerian and Tunisian Arabic, "gaf" (ڤ) is used to represent a voiced velar stop (IPA: IPA|/ɡ/) in informal occasions, and officially in names of places or persons containing a voiced velar stop, as in Guelma, Algeria or Gafsa, Tunisia. If the usage of "gaf" is not possible for technical restrictions, "qoph" is often used instead in these dialects. "Qoph" is the standard letter used for representing a "g" in Sa'idi and Yemeni Arabic.

The character is mapped in Unicode under position U+06A8.
